Voice typing

Tap the mic in any editable field and speak. Loquela inserts the text into the field you are typing in: messages, notes, search boxes and other editable fields.

Fixing a misheard word

Tap a word that came out wrong to see phonetic alternatives for it, without opening a transcript history.

When voice keeps writing a name or term wrong, you can tell it what to write instead. That list is stored only on your phone.

Where transcription happens

In Settings, Transcription location has three choices:

ChoiceWhat happens
On-device (the default)A voice model you downloaded turns your speech into text on the phone. The audio is processed in memory, not saved, and not sent anywhere. Free, and it works offline once the model is installed.
System (Android 12 and later)Your phone's own speech service, from Google or your phone's maker, listens and returns the text. That service handles the audio under its own privacy policy and settings; Loquela does not receive the audio.
API key (Full)Each recording you start goes directly from your phone to a speech-to-text provider you set up, such as OpenAI, Groq or Mistral, using an API key from that provider (a third-party API key). The provider bills you under its own terms. Loquela never receives the audio or the text.
Called Remote before Loquela 1.4

Before version 1.4 the app called this choice Remote. It has nothing to do with Loquela Remote, a separate speech-to-text API for developers; see the Remote docs.

Setting up a third-party provider

With Full, set up your provider at the bottom of Voice & Models in Settings: choose the provider (or a compatible server address you run), the model, and paste your API key. The key is stored only on your phone, encrypted with Android's secure keystore, left out of Android backup, and deleted when you remove it, sign out or switch accounts.

Microphones

A connected car or headset can change which microphone Android uses. Loquela lets you choose a preferred source, but the final route and sound quality still depend on Android, your phone and the accessory. If dictation sounds poor, try the same phrase through the phone's own microphone.

Turning voice off

You can turn voice typing off in Settings. That hides every voice shortcut and stops speech engines from loading; installed models stay on the phone until you delete them.

Where voice is held back

Voice typing, learning and suggestions are switched off in password and other sensitive fields.
